While much of the action occurs on the Missouri side, living on the Kansas side of this metro area can be a bit more expensive.
2. It’s a Mecca for Young People
More and more millennials are flocking to Kansas City for its desirable cost of living, leading to the growth of a very creative community. Independent boutiques and coffee shops dot the area, with walls of buildings decorated by colorful murals.
Downtown Kansas City has gone through a resurgence of sorts in recent years, thanks to a growing arts and culinary scene. Millennials are filling new residential developments in the downtown area.
Kansas City is a major metropolitan area boasting a diverse population of 491,000. KC is also a great place to raise a family, with more than a quarter of the metro area’s population being younger than 20. The suburban areas in particular are attractive to families for their great schools, low crime rate and safety.
3. The Weather
While it does have its periods of unseasonable weather in winter and summer, much of the time the weather is quite mild. Spring does bring rain and violent storms, with the metro area sitting on the edge of Tornado Alley. Flash flooding is common. The summers are hot, wet and muggy, while the winters are cold, dry, and windy. If you like a varied climate, KC is for you.
4. Plenty of Things to Do
There are many side trips you can take while living in KC to expand your knowledge and appreciation of the area. Hit major attractions such as the Capital building, the Rosedale Arch, Kansas City Zoo, National WW1 Museum, and Worlds of Fun amusement park. The job market in KC has historically been strong, even though it’s taken a bit of a hit with the pandemic. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, total employment for the Kansas City metro area is at 1,002,300 as of May 2020, down 99,100. Total employment fell 9% compared with a national decline of 11.7%.
The outlook is good, though. Future job growth over the next 10 years is estimated to be 32.5%. U.S. News and World Report has ranked Kansas City as one of the best places to live in the nation, as well as one of the best places to retire.
6. High Marks for Schools
If you have kids, you will love the school rankings. The Kansas City metro area has 163 primary and secondary schools, one of the best being University Academy-Upper. This is rated a 10 out of 10 on all counts. Other top-rated public elementary schools include Fox Hill, English Landing, Union Chapel and Academie Lafayette Charter. Top-rated middle and high schools include Plaza Middle School, Lincoln College Preparatory, and Stanley High School.
7. Lots of Green Space
Boasting 220 parks over 12,000 acres of green space, 100 miles of trails for running and biking, hundreds of athletic fields and tennis courts, about 30 lakes, 60 picnic shelters, five golf courses and four museums, KC is teeming with nature, wildlife and green spaces to enjoy.
