Lawrence is the 6th largest city in Kansas and is known for being a friendly and culturally diverse city. It’s home to shopping, entertainment, and dining areas that both locals and visitors love. Below are some of the things to do in Lawrence —  whether you’re moving to the city alone, with a partner or children, there is also something enjoyable for you to do.

1. Visit Massachusetts Street

One of the top places to visit in Lawrence is Massachusetts or Mass Street in downtown Lawrence. It’s one of the most popular places in the city that houses Victorian and Neoclassical architecture built between 1856- 1953. If you have a lot of time, take a scenic walk to admire the brilliant architecture in the historic district. You can also visit shops to get some souvenirs or decors for your apartment.

2. See the Natural History of Museum at the University of Kansas

If you love artifacts, do not miss the Natural History of Museum inside the University of Kansas. There are more than 350 interesting exhibits at the museum and it’s home to over 1.5 million artifacts. One of them is the popular Panorama of North American Wildlife. The museum is part of the university’s Biodiversity Institute.

3. Spend a Day at Prairie Park Nature Center

Stay close to nature by visiting Prairie Park Nature Center located at Harper Street. We would recommend that you take at least a day off to see the park. You can explore 100 acres of wetlands, prairie and woodlands. The park also has a fishing spot if you like to go fishing in the summer. If you love walking, there are walking trails available at the park too. You can even go bird watching. Prairie Park Nature Center is a good escape from city life. You can just relax, take a walk and just appreciate nature.

4. See the Lavender Farm at Washington Creek Lavender

Learn about Lavender by taking a lavender farm tour at Washington Creek Lavender. The owners will be more than happy to tell you interesting facts about the plant or anything that you want to know about lavender. You can also visit their shop and buy some lavender-inspired pottery and designs.

You’ll find Washington Creek Lavender just outside at Provence, just outside of Lawrence.

5. Learn the History of Kansas Athletics at Booth Family Hall of Athletics

Do you like sport? You can learn about the history and tradition of Kansas Athletics at the Booth Family Hall of Athletics. The museum is open year-round and visitors get a chance to see different galleries highlighting the University’s athletic teams.

6. Enjoy The Great Outdoors at Clinton State Park

Do you love the outdoors? There are a variety of outdoor activities available at Clinton State Park.  The place is about 4 miles west of Lawrence and home to wildlife such as deer and turkey. If you like walking or biking, the park also has a walking and biking trail available. To those who love camping, Clinton State Park is open year-round.

To those who love golf, Clinton State Park has an 18-hole golf course for all enthusiasts. Whether you’re looking for activities for the entire family or just for yourself, there is always something to do at Clinton State Park.

7. Sample Some Beers at Free State Brewing Company

Free State Brewing Company started brewing beer sometime in 1989 and they are still in business. Their 14-barrel brewhouse can produce delicious and authentic beer you’ll love. If you have time, try to visit their bar and sample not just beers but the local favorites too.

They are open 7 days a week and also available for both indoor and outdoor dining, and a carryout. They are known for their Fish & Chips and delicious quesadillas. From time to time, they also organize events during the beer festival season.

8. Dine at the Roost

The Roost offers breakfast and lunch. They also have a bakery and a coffee bar. Currently, though, they only allow carry out because of the pandemic. Their dining room is closed currently. However, you can still take out some of the favorites. If you love eggs, The Roost serves a variety of omelets including ham & cheese, Turkey Cheddar Bacon and Spinach Tomato Feta. You can also build your own omelet. When it comes to drinks and coffee, The Roost will not disappoint. The good food and drinks are a couple of reasons why locals and visitors visit The Roost.

9. Buy Stuff at Ruff House Art

Should you need to buy some personalized cards or gift packs, don’t forget to drop by Ruff House Art. The store is known for its beautiful planners, journals, greeting cards and miniature gift items. They have been in the business for nine years and still counting. Ruff House also sells party and wedding items including customized stationery and cards. It’s the perfect gift shop for all residents in Lawrence, Kansas.

10. Try a Variety of Restaurants

There are a lot of activities to do in Lawrence and one of the best things you can do is try a variety of cuisines. Do not miss the Neapolitan-style pies at Limestone Pizza Kitchen Bar. It’s a must-try. Also, do not forget to drink craft beer. If you love Greek cuisine, The Mad Greek is the place to go. They are known for their saganaki and baklava dessert. 11. Consider a Staycation

The museum is home to more than 36,000 pieces of art including sculptures, photographs and paintings. They are open from Thursday to Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. You can make a free reservation and even look at virtual exhibits from your home. They also offer a 3D tour for anyone interested to see interesting sculptures and paintings from ancient Egypt up to 17th century Europe.

13. See Sunflower Fields at Grinter Farm

Grinter Farm is just a few minutes from Lawrence and opens only during summer and early fall. The place is known for its beautiful sunflower fields that are open for everyone. If you want to take lovely photos, the best time to visit the farm is on sunny days, and a couple of hours after sunrise and then before sunset. The best time of months to would be either late August or early September where the sunflower looks the loveliest.

Also — the farm is frequented by lots of visitors. The best time to visit is on a weekday where it’s not crowded.

14. Go Shopping in Lawrence

The best place to go shopping is at Massachusetts Street located downtime. It’s home to several shops and restaurants. You will be spoilt for choice there.
