Plan Ahead of Time
Because summer is the busiest time of year for moving companies, you would be wise to plan well in advance. In fact, as soon as you have a closing date and move-in date on your new house, you should be making calls to movers near you. The best movers will fill up the quickest. You’ll also pay more, as the demand is high and they can charge higher prices. To prevent the need to rush around in the hot summer weather, you will want to book your move at least six weeks to two months from the date you want to move. Be as organized as you can, packing methodically in the weeks up till then so you don’t have to rush. You can pack your belongings yourself, or have your movers pack for you in the interest of time.Do Your Research
You may be short on time, but don’t compromise on the quality of the movers you choose. It’s not wise to just call one mover, get a quote and hire them over the phone. Call at least three and have them come out for an in-person quote so they can see your belongings and your home. This is the only way you can get an accurate quote. Things like no elevators in a townhome or multiple stories and narrow hallways will add to the price. Large, awkward items like pool tables, sectionals and pianos will also up the price. Don’t go with a lowball offer, even if it sounds really good. You don’t want to be the victim of a scam. Do your research online, reading reviews, asking around, and calling each company to ask them basic questions. A nice middle of the road quote should be fine. Don’t be lured in with low prices, though, because they may just increase your bill later with hidden fees.Schedule Your Movers in the Morning
In summer, as you know, the heat and humidity get going in full force by afternoon. This is why, in the interest of comfort, you should grab a morning slot with your mover if possible. It will still be relatively cool out. Keep lots of water bottles on hand and make sure your family and the movers stay hydrated. Wear light clothing and dress appropriately. It’s not uncommon for people to suffer from heat stroke in summer, especially when taking on arduous and physically demanding tasks. Take frequent breaks to have a protein-filled snack and drink some water or juice. Make sure your small children and pets stay cool in an air conditioned room, or arrange for their care elsewhere during moving day. Apply sunscreen and wear comfortable shoes — not flip flops. Sneakers and socks are best, with no loose jewelry around the neck.
