Moving Proz gives advice on hiring quality Kansas City movers.
Most moves go very smoothly. However, there is still the off chance that you could be the victim of a scam. That’s why you should always do your homework before hiring a residential moving company. Here are 10 tips to ensuring you hire the best Kansas City movers for you.
1. Perform Moving Inventory
A reputable moving company will perform an inventory checklist of all your belongings to determine the bulk and weight of your move. This can be done in person or, as dictated by recent events, through a virtual survey. The estimator should thoroughly check all of your storage places such as bookcases, cupboards, drawers, and garages. Remember, a big part of the mover’s price is based on the weight of your belongings and the space they take up in the truck.
2. Get a Walk-Through
A good estimator will take his or her time going through your home and assessing the situation. They will ask about what you plan to move from the current home to the next home. Be honest about what you don’t plan on taking with you, whether you’re planning to give stuff away, donate it to a charity, sell it online or leave for the new owners.
3. Don’t Pay a Large Deposit
Reputable movers won’t ask you for all the cash upfront or even a large deposit. You should only be expected to pay upon delivery. When paying in advance, there’s no guarantee you will see your belongings again. When paying, be sure to use a credit card, which will protect you against fraudulent activity.
4. Be Leery of Name Switches
Some companies will do business under many names, to avoid being assessed by the Better Business Bureau and other watchdog sites. Make sure the company you choose has a local address and can provide you with licensing and insurance information. Employees should answer the phone by reiterating the full name of the business.
5. Get References
Ask your friends and family for recommendations, and obtain a list of reliable movers from the American Moving and Storage Association . When you call various movers for quotes, ask to speak with references – preferably a list of three customers who have moved in the last three months. Call and ask them about their experiences.
6. Ask About Packing
If you decide to pack your belongings on your own, remember that the mover isn’t responsible for damage. But if you have your mover pack for you, you will have to pay up for the boxes and packing materials, as well as time and labor.
7. Beware of Extra Fees
If you’re moving out of or into a multiple story home or apartment, you will probably have to pay extra fees for the movers to navigate steep stairwells if no elevator is present, as well as tight hallways and other cramped areas. Likewise, it’s extra for narrow streets that can’t fit a moving van. Ask your mover about any additional fees so you’re not surprised at the end.
8. Don’t Sign a Blank Moving Contract
Don’t sign a blank contract. The moving contract should be detailed, and in writing. It should include the estimate and any extra fees, along with pick-up and delivery dates. Read your contract before signing.
9. Know Your Estimate
Keep in mind there are three types of moving contracts:
- A non-binding estimate: The company can’t require payment more than 10 percent over the original estimate.
- A non-binding to exceed estimate on your contract: You won’t have to pay for overages to the original estimate.
- A binding estimate on your contract: This is a guaranteed price for the move with all extras and services.
10. Report Problems
You generally have nine months to report any issues or problems to the moving company and then file an insurance claim. Open each box on moving day once it has arrived in the new place and check for damage. Make note of any problems on the bill of lading before you sign it.
Your mover has one month to acknowledge receipt of your claim, denying or paying the claim within 120 days of receiving it. This is to protect you, so don’t skip this important step.
If you follow the above 10 tips, you will be ensuring a smooth move by reputable movers.
