What to Know About Summer Moving

Interesting in Summer moving? You should contact Moving Proz-they will do the moving for you!

Summer is a popular time of year for vacations, for sure. But they’re also a popular time for residential moves. Moving can be stressful throughout other seasons, of course, but in summer, it can be even more so due to the time crunch, limited scheduling, hot weather, and more. But nonetheless, this is when most people decide to make a move, as their kids are out of school for the next few months and they don’t have to disrupt their normal school year.

Summer is also busy because people prefer to move in the nice weather as opposed to chillier winter weather. You will have to plan ahead of time if you can, as movers book up fast in summer. You want to make sure you get an ideal time slot. Overall, you’ll need to give extra thought to how you will keep cool, make the mover go smoothly and bear in mind logistics so the experience is a pleasant one.

Plan Ahead of Time

Because summer is the busiest time of year for moving companies, you would be wise to plan well in advance. In fact, as soon as you have a closing date and move-in date on your new house, you should be making calls to movers near you. The best movers will fill up the quickest. You’ll also pay more, as the demand is high and they can charge higher prices.

To prevent the need to rush around in the hot summer weather, you will want to book your move at least six weeks to two months from the date you want to move. Be as organized as you can, packing methodically in the weeks up till then so you don’t have to rush. You can pack your belongings yourself, or have your movers pack for you in the interest of time.

Do Your Research

You may be short on time, but don’t compromise on the quality of the movers you choose. It’s not wise to just call one mover, get a quote and hire them over the phone. Call at least three and have them come out for an in-person quote so they can see your belongings and your home. This is the only way you can get an accurate quote. Things like no elevators in a townhome or multiple stories and narrow hallways will add to the price.

Large, awkward items like pool tables, sectionals and pianos will also up the price. Don’t go with a lowball offer, even if it sounds really good. You don’t want to be the victim of a scam. Do your research online, reading reviews, asking around, and calling each company to ask them basic questions. A nice middle of the road quote should be fine. Don’t be lured in with low prices, though, because they may just increase your bill later with hidden fees.

Schedule Your Movers in the Morning

In summer, as you know, the heat and humidity get going in full force by afternoon. This is why, in the interest of comfort, you should grab a morning slot with your mover if possible. It will still be relatively cool out. Keep lots of water bottles on hand and make sure your family and the movers stay hydrated. Wear light clothing and dress appropriately. It’s not uncommon for people to suffer from heat stroke in summer, especially when taking on arduous and physically demanding tasks.

Take frequent breaks to have a protein-filled snack and drink some water or juice. Make sure your small children and pets stay cool in an air conditioned room, or arrange for their care elsewhere during moving day. Apply sunscreen and wear comfortable shoes  — not flip flops. Sneakers and socks are best, with no loose jewelry around the neck.

Move on Slow Days

If you can, try to book your move on a traditionally slow day of the week or month. In general, the beginnings and ends of the month are very busy, as this is when most people have to be out of their apartments. Weekends are also very busy because people have those days off work. Holiday weekends, such as Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day are even busier.

You will probably face the highest rates on those days. Moving companies won’t lower their prices because they don’t have to. The demand is there. You can probably fetch a better price if you book your move on a weekday, preferable Monday through Thursday, since most people are working at those times.

If you are stuck in a corner and have to book a move during those busy times, you may not be able to get a slot, and if you do, be prepared to pay the highest rates.

Take Care of Your Stuff

Certain items won’t do well sitting in a hot moving truck all day. You should bring those things with you, such as candles, plants, prescription medication, CDs, cassettes, vinyl records, and musical instruments. These items could all warp or suffer damage when exposed to high temperatures. You will also want to take any perishables with you in the car as well, so they don’t spoil. Actually, most movers won’t take perishables such as food on their trucks anyway.

Now that you know all the challenges associated with moving in the summer months, you can better plan for every scenario. Planning ahead is your best bet at this time of year. Don’t worry, you got this!
