Flying: Pack Your Medications in Carry-On Luggage
If you have to take a flight to get to your new home, you should pack a carry-on bag with your most essential items. This includes a couple of changes of clothes, essential toiletries, and all needed prescription medications. Put them in your carry on instead of your checked luggage or moving boxes in case you need them. Transport medication for your small children in your own carry-on for safety.
Keep Them With You
Don’t pack these items with other belongings for loading onto the moving truck. They should remain with you at all times in case you need them, since many prescription medications must be taken at the same times every day. You also don’t want to misplace them during the move, as replacing these pills can be costly and inconvenient.
Keep Medications Away From Heat
You may have noticed that your prescription medicine bottles advise you to keep them stored at room temperature. That’s because many medications lose their effectiveness if exposed to extremely hot or cold temperatures. This applies to both over-the-counter and prescription medications.
Do not lock them up in a hot car or the moving truck. Keep them in a temperature-controlled environment, from your existing home to a bin to your car and then into your new home. Put the bin or bag with your meds into the car only as you’re about to leave. Remove them from the car as soon as you arrive.

If you use a national pharmacy chain for your prescription medication, they can transfer your prescription to the closest location for you. Call to ask what information they will need to transfer all prescriptions for your whole family, then be sure to get that information from your doctor or pharmacy before leaving town.
